Katja Hansen

Katja Hansen, P.Eng., has a degree in environmental engineering, and is a research fellow at Technische Universität München. She is also a guest lecturer at different universities, including the Exeter University Circular Economy executive learning program. Ms. Hansen is a scientific board member to the Cradle to Cradle NGO. Her core expertise is helping companies, public agencies and NGOs to transition to a beneficial circular economy based on Cradle to Cradle design principles.
With respect to low income countries, as a researcher Katja co-authored formative studies in Latin America, Africa and Europe on “Intelligent Product System” (IPS) methods for agrochemicals, nutrient recycling and natural and synthetic fibers, including for the FAO and UNICEF. From 1992-1997 she was Scientific Director of a European Commission infrastructure project that transferred water recycling and algae production technologies from China and Germany to Brazil. Today, the systems are being used by more than ten thousand residents in several different countries, including the island nation of Haiti. Her resulting co-authored publication “Guide to Wastewater Recycling in Tropical Climates” was the first publication by the European Commission on water recycling in such regions.
