OLi-Shakespeare for ESL

Cheer in a time of challenge

There are reasons to be worried about current events and the state of the world, but sometimes it is important to take a break for learning and a laugh, especially with people outside our usual circles.

At OLi-works we write original comedy plays to enable groups to get together on-line and develop their enunciation and pronunciation skills. We learn new words and develop some acquaintance with science and technology terminology. We make friends across time zones and locations, talk about current political events and hone voice acting skills — all in an hour.  We can even show you how to turn yourself into a “movie star” by using some lighting techniques on Zoom.

Among such projects is an adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s lighter comedies, “The Merry Wives of Windsor” into a modern play called “the Three Wise Wives of Windsor” – or tTWWW for short. Details on this workshop series and its themes are described here.

We have discovered that, along with developing English and voice-acting skills for native English speakers, this play, and others we have written for OLi-works, lend themselves for English as a Second Language (ESL) training. Currently we are running a free ESL pilot assisting Spanish speakers to read English out loud. Would you like to come along?  If so, contact us. We meet on Wednesdays at 8:00pm ET. The last day of the free ESL pilot is April 24th, 2024. It is completely harmless and only fun and learning are intended. Bios of the facilitators are here.

Apart from our ESL pilot, our on-line theatre series is available in English for performing, observing, and rehearsing. One objective is to increase your skill and confidence on-camera, in an expanding world of on-line and hybrid work.  Another aim is to develop your English vocabulary and knowledge of English literature. A third objective is to lift your spirits and inspire your creative side. We believe performing in theatrical work leads to a better understanding of others, and more innovative thinking.

Your first drop-in to our regular OLi-Shakespeare English series (non-ESL) is free.  Currently the timing is not set. We can negotiate timing that suits you. All subsequent scenes of a given play cost CAD$5 per person, per scene, or negotiable if you are a group. (You can buy virtual tickets here.)  We have more to tell you, so do contact us if this workshop with a touch of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) appeals to you or your group.
