A Sweden-Canada Workshop for Citizens

A Sweden-Canada on-line workshop series on AI

This November OLi-works is launching “A Canada-Sweden workshop series: Applications of Generative AI for Citizens and others”.  Anyone wishing to develop knowledge in this area is welcome. Part of the five-part series is free, as indicated below.

Definition: Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to machines or systems designed to perform tasks that require human-like cognitive functions, such as reasoning, learning, perception and decision-making. Generative AI, a subset of AI, focuses on creating new content—such as text, images, or music—by learning patterns from existing data.

Timing:  Wednesdays, 09h00 PT, 12h00 (noon) ET, 18h00 CET

Topics

November 20th (Price – free) – An introduction to Generative AI, covering its definition, historical evolution, an overview of popular AI tools and a discussion on future opportunities and potential challenges of the technology.

November 27th (Price – free) – How to save time and fact-check for a digital travelogue, featuring a Swedish historical person of global renown, using ChatGPT. Learn to compose prompts so a GenAI tool returns useful content.

December 4th – (Price – $25) – Application of Generative AI tools to enhance an investigation of cancer immunotherapy. We will search for accredited institutions, networks, clusters, clinical trials, companies and medical and scientific experts. Note this is an introduction to a vast topic.

December 11th – (Price – $25) Application of Generative AI tools exploring hydrogen as a potential source of energy while mitigating climate change. Current situation in Sweden and Europe. Learn how GenAI tools can assist with the inquiry. Note this is an introduction to a vast topic.

December 18th – (Price – $25) Ethics and issues related to Generative AI. Here we elucidate a few key controversies and issues. We also identify key government, academic and not-for-profit think tanks, existing regulations and policies.

Payment if applicable will be by e-payment or Paypal, with details provided on registration.

Process

This workshop is a pilot, and we will alter our usual operating mode at OLi-works (where sharing information and networking among participants is the usual mechanism – see Section One, paragraph four, here, under our Workshops tab for details on our regular list and modality).

For this GenAI pilot workshop, contact information on participants will not be shared with other attendees.  The presentation portion will be around 40 minutes, while question and answer (Q&A) about 20 minutes.  Participants will be asked to fill out a short evaluation form after the workshop.  Once we receive and process information from the evaluation, we will propose next steps.

Speakers

Dr. Dan Berg, who will be speaking from Uppsala, Sweden, is an expert in materials science, clean energy technologies and data modelling, including deep learning techniques. Over the course of his 20-year career in R&D, Dr. Berg has worked at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Uppsala University and Chalmers University of Technology. He has managed more than seventy R&D projects and assumed the Principal Investigator role for numerous projects, successfully securing more than 25M Swedish Kronor from the EU and Swedish funding programs. Dr. Berg has experience across a range of industries, including IT, energy, e-commerce and metallurgy. Dr. Berg has recently transitioned from academia to consulting, helping companies harness digital solutions to streamline operations and adopt transformative technologies, including AI-driven innovations.

Ms. Meg Barker, who will join from Kelowna, BC, Canada, is the founder of the company and network OLi-works. After stints in research at five Canadian universities / government labs, primarily in cell biology, she worked at a number of Canadian federal government agencies, including funders of R&D, federal research policy development and foreign affairs. Ms. Barker has worked on R&D capacity-building programs and projects in high- and low-income countries, often in the energy and life science sectors.  Further details about her background are available here.
